The Arizona Cardinals released running back Adrian Peterson after a half-season in the desert that included a pair of impressive games and a season-ending injury.
The seven-time All-Pro running back began last season with New Orleans but, after barely playing, was dealt to the Cardinals.
Peterson rushed for 134 yards in a win over Tampa Bay and 159 in a win over San Francisco. In six games, he gained 448 yards on 129 carries for Arizona before being sidelined with a neck injury.
Quarterback Drew Brees agreed to a two-year, $50 million extension with the Saints, with $27 million of it guaranteed in the first year.
Brees, who turned 39 in January, was due to become a free agent on Wednesday. But he has said he wanted to finish his career in New Orleans, where he has played since 2006, won a Super Bowl and led what has been one of the most productive offenses in the NFL since he and coach Sean Payton arrived.
Bears add playmakers
Chicago is set to sign Jaguars receiver Allen Robinson and Eagles tight end Trey Burton, giving quarterback Mitchell Trubisky some playmaking targets. Robinson told ESPN he plans to sign a three-year, $42 million contract, while t Burton is leaving the Eagles after agreeing to a $32 million, four-year deal.
Kansas City agreed to deals with receiver Sammy Watkins and middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens, filling two of their most glaring needs on the eve of free agency.
•-The Jaguars will sign All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell to a five-year, $66.5 million contract. The Jags also agreed to keep receiver Marqise Lee in a four-year deal worth $38 million.

•Five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and linebacker Corey Nelson agreed to one-year contracts with the Eagles.

•The Jets agreed to terms on a one-year deal to bring back quarterback Josh McCown.
•The Redskins agreed on a five- year, $40 million contract with ex- Seahawks wideout Paul Richardson.
•Middle linebacker Paul Posluszny retired after 11 NFL seasons with Buffalo and Jacksonville.
•The Ravens released running back Danny Woodhead, who was slowed by a hamstring injury in his only season with the team.
